In this blog I’ll show you how to use StarWinds VTL in combination with VBR File Backup to Tape to backup any NAS device (or indeed any shared folder!)Įven if your NAS device does support NDMP and you are considering using VBR’s future NDMP features, you will still need to use a physical tape library or a virtual tape library as a target, so a solution like StarWind VTL could play an important part in your solution.įirst of all, I need to state that this is a solution that I have designed myself and I don’t offer any support for it should you decide to implement it. If you need a NAS backup solution you should now be using the native features of Veeam v10. Note: With the imminent release of Veeam Backup and Replication v10, integrated NAS backup will be greatly improved. The solution turns out to be quite simple – use Veeam Backup and Replication’s (VBR) File Backup to Tape feature. Unfortunately the QNAP OS doesn’t support NDMP. The problem was how to backup the file shares on the NAS box using Veeam? Veeam have roadmapped support for NDMP in future release which was a consideration. He had a customer who uses a couple of QNAP NAS filers for file sharing and is using Veeam for virtual machine backups. Recently, a Veeam reseller came to me with a backup problem.
